Annexes (Statistical Summaries, Force Characteristics, Glossary, abbreviations, Acronyms, Weapon System Nicknames). Index. Some wear and soiling to covers. Minor page warping. Pencil erasure on title page. Significant portions of this book were derived from a study produced by the Congressional Research Service and were not covered by copyright. From the Foreword signed by Congressman Bill Chappell and Congressman Jack Kemp: "For several years, John Collins, working as an analyst of national security and defense issues for the Congressional Research Service, has built a respected reputation among those familiar with issues of defense and national security. Based largely on the high regard in which Mr. Collins is held professionally, two years ago we jointly requested that he undertake a comprehensive treatment of the military and strategic balance between our nation's forces and those of the Soviet Union. The final product of John Collin's work, as published between these covers, is a balance sheet. The book is a milestone, as well as the first truly comprehensive look at the subject, in which the author not only examines all facets of the situation but attempts to relate those elements to one another." Minor corner crease at bottom of front cover. Los Alamos National Laboratory (Los Alamos or LANL for short) is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory initially organized during World War II for the design of nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project. Los Alamos was selected as the top secret location for bomb design and officially commissioned in 1943. At the time it was known as Project Y, one of a series of laboratories located across the United States given letter names to maintain their secrecy. Los Alamos was the center for design and overall coordination, while the other labs concentrated on the production of uranium and plutonium bomb fuels. Los Alamos was the heart of the project, bringing together some of the world's most famous scientists, among them numerous Nobel Prize winners. More

Improving predictive capability is an implicit goal in the major missions of Los Alamos National Laboratory: simulating performance of weapons in the stockpile, quantifying uncertainties in those simulations, and developing strategies to mitigate global threats. Success in achieving this goal depends on closely coordinating theory, experiment, and computer simulation. This issue of Los Alamos Science presents examples from across the Laboratory. This issue contains articles on weapons outlook, uncertainty quantification, materials, computer networks, computational biology, turbulence, and numerical methods. More

Cover has wear and soiling, especially at the edges. Mailing information on back cover. Los Alamos Science, the flagship publication of Los Alamos National Laboratory from 1980 through 2005, was distributed to the international scientific community, academic libraries, and US government policymakers. It presented a coherent picture of some of the most exciting scientific initiatives of the Laboratory and served as a forum for LANL scientists to display the breadth and depth of their research and its significance to national security. Many volumes are devoted to areas in which LANL was or still is a leader. These range from frontiers in the biosciences - Human Genome Project, AIDS research, and radiation protection - to those in the physical sciences - neutrons as probes of nanomaterials, quantum computing and information, and predictive science.
