He graduated from the Command and General Staff College; the Armed Forces Staff College, and the Army War College. He served as a company commander during the Korean War, when he was wounded in combat. He served as aide-de-camp to the chief of staff at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe. He later served as an Army instructor at the U.S. Air Force Academy and as deputy battle group commander of the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, N.C. Gen. Patch served two tours in Vietnam, first as commander of Detachment C-2, 5th Special Forces Group and then as commander of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division.
