Washington DC: William O. Douglas, 1939. Presumed to be one of a kind of this date. Index card. Format is 3.25 inches by 5,125 inches. Some toning/discoloration on card stock. Pasted onto the front is parts of a letter, the pieces are: top of stationery stating "Supreme Court of the United States Washington D.C.", then "Chambers of Justice William O Douglas", then the date of "Aril 26, 1939,", and finally a 1.25 inches by 3.75 section that has typed "Yours faithfully' followed by the handwritten signature "Wm O. Douglas". The other side is blank. Douglas was sworn into office on April 17, 1939, making is a very early signature as a Supreme Court Justice. In general, legal scholars have noted that Douglas's judicial style was unusual in that he did not attempt to elaborate justifications for his judicial positions on the basis of text, history, or precedent. Douglas was known for writing short, pithy opinions which relied on philosophical insights, observations about current politics, and literature, as much as more conventional judicial sources. Douglas wrote many of his opinions in twenty minutes, often publishing the first draft. Douglas was also known for his fearsome work ethic, by publishing over thirty books and once telling an exhausted secretary, Fay Aull, "If you hadn't stopped working, you wouldn't be tired." More

A bold study of the New Deal from the viewpoint of Europe and American by the Goldwin Smith Professor of Government at Cornell University. Among the topics covered are Europe's Image of America, The Great Depression, Roosevelt, New Tools for the New State, Electricity and Freedom, The Supreme Court and the Constitution, The Meaning of Freedom and Equality, The New Landscape of American Society: Lights and Shadows, and Reflections on Tocqueville. Mario Einaudi was born in 1904 in one of the most influential family in Italy. His father, Luigi Einaudi, was one of Italy's great economic thinkers and became the second President of the Republic of Italy. After graduation from Turin with a dissertation on Edmund Burke, Einaudi spent two years at the London School of Economics, working with William Beveridge and Harold Laski. He worked for the Office of War Information and the Council on Foreign Relations and began to teach future Allied Military Government personnel about European government once a week at Cornell University. Three central tenets to Einaudi's work were: that the study of politics must be embedded in history; that Europe and the United States have much to teach each other about the practice of democratic politics; and that the classics of political theory must inform the study of contemporary democratic states. These themes were best embodied in his 1959 book, The Roosevelt Revolution. More
