Rear cover attached to map. Map is printed in color. Pin holes at corners (map appears to have been posted to a bulletin board or otherwise wall mounted. Some soiling noted. This appears to have been produced in the 1920s or 1930s. A road map or route map is a map that primarily displays roads and transport links rather than natural geographical information. It is a type of navigational map that commonly includes political boundaries and labels, making it also a type of political map. In addition to roads and boundaries, road maps often include points of interest, such as prominent businesses or buildings, tourism sites, parks and recreational facilities, hotels and restaurants, as well as airports and train stations. A road map may also document non-automotive transit routes, although often these are found only on transit maps. More
Los Angeles: 1920. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Single sheet, printed on both sides. Sheet is approximately 14 inches by fourteen inches. Illustrations (with some color). Map. Descriptive Narrative. Rare surviving copy. No images found during an internet search. Substantial wear and soiling, Some tearing and small holes at the folds. It has been folded so that there are eight panels per side. The interior side is one multi-faceted image. The caption at the top reads "In All the World No Trip Like This." There is a map in the center of the page surrounded by ten photographs [The views shown are characteristic of the beauty and unusual interest of Catalina's treasure spots.] Toward the bottom third there is a caption that reads :Catalina--Gem of the Pacific which a large picture of the Steamship Avalon and smaller pictures of a glass bottom boat and the Catalina Terminal at Wilmington (Los Angeles Harbor). The other side has two title panels stating Catalina Island Descriptive Map. There are six panels with photos and a map showing the route from the Los Angeles Terminal to the Island. A 'Round the Island' excursion is offered. The narrative addresses discovery of the island by Spanish explorers, became 'the property of Mexico', deeded to Nicholas Covarrubias and then purchased by James Lick. In 1885 it was purchased by G. Shatto. It was invested in for housing and for mining. In 1919 it was purchased by William Wrigley, Jr. This brochure has the number 8-23-20 which is taken to mean that it was printed on August 23, 1920. More
