There is occasional loss of marginal page material. This is an important snapshot of both the mid-century understanding of the American Political Process and also of how it was being taught during the turbulent period of the Vietnam War, Civil Rights movement, and a high level of political activism and protests. The authors were from the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University. Charles Raymond Adrian (March 12, 1922 – May 28, 2004) was an American professor of political science who specialized in municipal politics. He started teaching at Michigan State University in 1955. Through 1956 and 1957 he served as an administrative assistant to G. Mennen Williams, then Governor of Michigan. During his time in Michigan Adrian wrote two articles, Some General Characteristics of Nonpartisan Elections and A Typology for Nonpartisan Elections, that are considered the seminal works in the study of non-partisanship.
