Cartwright Ady was a respected author and authority on art who wrote for leading art periodicals and published 23 books on art and history. Cartwright Ady highlighted the lives of women, including Christina of Denmark, the art-loving Danish expatriate. Julia Mary Cartwright Ady (7 November 1851 – 28 April 1924) was a British historian and art critic whose work focused on the Italian Renaissance. Cartwright Ady was born at Edgcote, Northamptonshire. She was home-schooled in art, literature, languages, dance and music. Cartwright Ady developed a fascination with art early on, particularly of the Italian Renaissance. Her cousin William Cornwallis Cartwright was an art collector and supporter of the Italian Risorgimento, and Cartwright Ady regularly visited his house at Aynhoe Park where she had her first exposure to works of the Old Masters. Her cousin's collection included paintings by Murillo, Canaletto, Spagnoletto and Albano. Cartwright Ady read widely from a young age, covering historical Italian texts, contemporary fiction and British art publications. She admired the poetry of Robert Browning and his collection Men and Women (1855) with its poems ‘Fra Filippo Lippi’ and ‘Andrea del Sarto’, inspired by Italian Renaissance painters, was influential. She was also an avid reader of John Ruskin, George Eliot and early Italian writing and poetry such as by Savonarola and Torquato Tasso. More

Enter a Child is her autobiography; she was an unusually sensitive child who had to please impossibly demanding Victorian parents. She had strong aesthetic urges that were completely misunderstood and ignored by her relatives, much like Lord Berners in his own memoir First Childhood. Everything their daughter does is wrong by their lights, and she rarely understands why. Baynes does a good job of pulling you into the viewpoint of a innocent child placed in the middle of rigid, dictatorial adults who labor under a maelstrom of neurosis. In many ways, Enter a Child is a book about a daughter of a baronet who suffered a great deal from her excessively rigid family. Enter a Child is a good book that ought to be better known than it is. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Bookplate. This is approximately 2.5 inches by 4.125 inches with the image approximately 2 inches by 3.675 inches. Bookplate  with the oval image of clams under water, a sea animal, stratified earth, two birds, a plant and a created crest of arms (two birds heads and a cross), and states "Julia Gardner" (at the top of the oval) and "Ex Libris" (at bottom of oval).  This is believed to have belonged to Julia Anna Gardner (January 26, 1882 – November 15, 1960), was an American geologist who worked for the United States Geological Survey for 32 years, was known worldwide for her work in stratigraphy and mollusc paleontology.  During World War I, she served as an auxiliary nurse in France and worked with the American Friends Service Committee in devastated areas of France after the war, returning to the United States in 1920.  She then joined the United States Geological Survey, spending most of her career studying the Tertiary beds in the coastal plain, including areas from Maryland south into Mexico.  Ecphora gardnerae, an extinct snail shell was named after Julia Anna Gardner. In 1994 the state of Maryland designated it the official state fossil shell of Maryland. More

Her awards include the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing. Keller was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University from the period of 1998 to 1999. Her reviews and commentary air on National Public Radio and on The Newshour(PBS). Keller began her career as a journalist as an intern for columnist Jack Anderson. She went on to work for over 25 years as a reporter for many major newspapers, including the Columbus Dispatch, The Daily Independent, and the Chicago Tribune. She joined the staff of the Chicago Tribune in late 1998, but left her job in 2012 to write full-time. Keller won a Pulitzer Prize for Feature Writing for her three-part narrative account of the deadly Utica, Illinois tornado outbreak. The Tribune has won many Pulitzers but Keller's prize was its first win for feature writing. In 2008, Keller wrote a nonfiction book that detailed the cultural impact of the Gatling gun. More
