A former president of the Society of Civil War Historians, he is the author of Richard Taylor: Soldier Prince of Dixie (1992) and Brothers in Gray: The Civil War Letters of the Pierson Family (1997), and most recently, a coauthor of Doris Miller, Pearl Harbor, and the Birth of the Civil Rights Movement (2017).
