Wear and tears to top and bottom of dust jacket Includes preface, black and white photographs, and one black-and-white map of the European Theater of Operations in 1944. As a member of the 615th Bomb Squadron, 401st Bomb Group, 8th Air Force, Cury's B-17 was shot down on June 19, 1944 on a raid to Merignac, France (his 30th and final mission). After being shot down, Cury managed to elude the Germans before being captured. He managed to escape on the way to a prison camp before being caught by the French Resistance, who accused him of being a Gestapo agent. For several months afterwards, he fought with the French resistance, and was, according to his own account, the first American to witness the devastation of Oradour-Sur-Glane after the German massacre there. He finally managed to seize a decrepit German aircraft and fly it across the English Channel back to England. All of this and more he recounted in his 1988 book Time Out For War. Ed Cury's combat missions in a B-17 included the famous raids on Schweinfurt, Frankfurt, Augsburg, Leipzig, and the first of two Berlin raids. His many decorations included two Distinguished Flying Crosses--one awarded to him when a bomb-bay door jammed above the target. Cury, working over the open bomb bay without a parachute, cleared the door and ejected the armed incendiary bombs from the craft. He was awarded France's Croix de Guerre with Silver Star for his service with the French Resistance Forces. More
