Oak Ridge, TN: The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, 1961. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Booklet. 32 pages, plus covers. Illustrations. Map. Bibliography. Cover has some wear and soiling. The Oak Ridge League had existed for 13 years and gave advice to the governing officials. However, at the time of publication it had recently become 'self-governing' and had worked toward incorporation. Having helped achieve this, the League decided to take a look at the government. They prepared this handbook to give the citizens a overview of their government. The contents include: The Story of Oak Ridge, Cultural and Educational Resources, City Government, Police, Fire Protection, Public Health, Civil Defense, Public Works, Elections, Voting, Finance, Schools, Recreation, and a few other topics. Oak Ridge is a suburban city in Anderson and Roane counties in the eastern part of the U. S. state of Tennessee, about 25 miles (40 km) west of downtown Knoxville. Oak Ridge's population was 29,330 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Knoxville Metropolitan Area. Oak Ridge's nicknames include the Atomic City, the Secret City, the Ridge, and the City Behind the Fence. Oak Ridge was established in 1942 as a production site for the Manhattan Project—the massive American, British, and Canadian operation that developed the atomic bomb. Being the site of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Y-12 National Security Complex, scientific and technological development still plays a crucial role in the city's economy and culture in general.
