New York: Arco Publishing Company, Inc., 1970. Reprint Edition. Library Edition [stated on DJ]. Hardcover. 452 pages. Illustrations. Tables. Glossary. Index. DJ has some wear, soiling and sticker residue on front flap. Possibly the most interesting aspect of this, the eighth issue of Jane's, are the articles by combatants in the Russo-Japanese War, supplemented by a special series of photographs showing the ships destroyed and the extent of the damage suffered by others. There is a summary of naval actions during the war and notes on relevant strategy and tactics. All included are revised rules of Jane's "Naval War Games". This is a large and heavy book and would require additional shipping charges if sent outside of the United States. This is an annual reference book of information on all the world's warships arranged by nation, including information on ships' names, dimensions, armaments, silhouettes and photographs, etc. Each edition describes and illustrates warships of different national naval and paramilitary forces, providing data on their characteristics. The first issue was illustrated with Jane's own ink sketches--photos began to appear with the third volume in 1900. The present title was adopted in 1905. Its success launched a number of publications carrying the name "Jane's". Ten early editions of Jane's (those of 1898, 1905-06, 1906-07, 1914, 1919, 1924, 1931, 1939, 1944-45, and 1950-51) were reissued in facsimile reprints by Arco Publishing starting in 1969. All of these appeared in the oblong or "landscape" format until the 1956/57 edition, while from 1957/58 the present "portrait" layout was adopted, thus matching the sister Jane's publication on aircraft. Format is approximately 10.4 inches by 13.75 inches. 455 numbered illustrations (some numbers have multiple images). Introduction Between Modern Art and Design by Yoshiaki Tono. List of JAGDA Exhibitors. Special Feature: Posters for Cultural Events. (Over 300 images, most in color). Section on Packaging, Record Jackets. Section on Signs and Symbols. JAGDA was launched in April 1978 with 705 members, which soon exceeded 1,000 in the same year. After becoming a public-interest corporation in 1984, JAGDA evolved into a graphic design organization representing Japan. However, not everything in the Association’s history has gone smoothly. While responding to actual social needs in accordance with economic trends and other temporal developments, we have evolved into an organization that is characterized by its members’ cutting-edge sensitivity. Our mission for the 21st century, an age requiring further advancements in design, is to expand the definition of “graphic design” and work toward creation of a new stage in its history. In 1981, the Association published the first issue of its annual, Graphic Design in Japan. A work of high quality with first rate production values it did much to grow JAGDA's membership over the following years. More
