Don Higginbotham (May 22, 1931 – June 22, 2008) was an American historian and Dowd Professor of History at the University of North Carolina. A leading scholar of George Washington, he was a pioneering practitioner of the “new” military history and an expert on colonial and revolutionary America and the early national United States. He served twice (1975–76 and 1998–99) as visiting professor of history at the United States Military Academy. Kenneth Nebenzahl lectures and writes in the fields of early mapping, exploration and American history. Nebenzahl served many years as a consultant to Rand McNally & Co., the Hudson’s Bay Company and The Library of Congress. As an aid to the modern day reader, each of the maps is accompanied by some 300 words of commentary by Nebenzahl. These 'captions' help interprets the action depicted, explain the origin of the maps, and the significance of the engagement, as the situation warrants. Higginbotham contributes a 40,000 word essay on the background of the war. Higginbotham's text could stand as a worthy book on its own. As it is, much of the understanding of the how and why of the events mapped springs from this well-written commentary. More

The United States Navy (USN) is the naval warfare service branch of the United States Armed Forces and one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. It is the largest and most capable navy in the world and it has been estimated that in terms of tonnage of its active battle fleet alone, it is larger than the next 13 navies combined, which includes 11 U.S. allies or partner nations. It has the highest combined battle fleet tonnage and the world's largest aircraft carrier fleet, with eleven in service, and two new carriers under construction. With 336,978 personnel on active duty and 101,583 in the Ready Reserve, the U.S. Navy is the third largest of the U.S. military services in terms of personnel. More

Christopher Eric Hitchens (13 April 1949 – 15 December 2011) was an Anglo-American author, columnist, essayist, orator, religious and literary critic, social critic, and journalist. Hitchens was an ardent advocate for the separation of church and state; a self-described antitheist, he regarded the concept of a god or supreme being as a totalitarian belief that destroys individual freedom, and argued that free expression and scientific discovery should replace religion as a means of teaching ethics and defining human civilization. During World War II, James A Huston served as an operations officer in the 3rd Battalion, 134th Infantry, a unit that helped to liberate or capture dozens of cities across France, Belgium, and Germany. From July 1944 through April 1945, the regiment captured 8,974 prisoners of war and covered over 1,500 combat miles, but lost 10,046 men in the process. After teaching history at Purdue University for 26 years — with interim years teaching at the National War College, Naval War College — he came to the University of Lynchburg, where he had a profound impact on the academic life of the institution. Dr. Huston served as dean of the College and professor of history and international relations from 1972 to 1984, when he retired. In its most comprehensive sense, it is those aspects or military operations that deal with: Design, development, acquisition, storage, distribution, maintenance, evacuation, and disposition of materiel. Transport of personnel. Acquisition or construction, maintenance, operation and disposition of facilities. Acquisition or furnishing of services. Medical and health service support. More
