Goldstein is Visiting Professor at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University. At Brown, he is investigating the costs of great power competition with both China and Russia in association with the Costs of War Project at Watson. He is also assisting in the further development of Watson?s China Initiative. Goldstein serves concurrently as Director of Asia Engagement at the Washington think-tank Defense Priorities, which advocates for realism and restraint in U.S. defense policy. In this role, he is overseeing a range of studies that evaluate U.S. foreign policy and defense strategy in the Asia-Pacific region, including with respect to such key flashpoints as the Korean Peninsula, the South China Sea, the Sino-Indian border, and also the status of Taiwan. He maintains expertise in both Chinese and Russian military strategic development, and also has expertise on particular issues in the China-Russia relationship, including especially the Arctic and also Central Asia. In Oct. 2021, Goldstein retired after 20 years of service on the faculty at the U.S. Naval War College after being promoted to the rank of Full Professor. During his career at NWC, he founded the China Maritime Studies Institute and has been awarded the Superior Civilian Service Medal. He has written or edited seven books on Chinese strategy and continues to work on a book length project that examines the nature of China-Russia relations in the 21st century. This is one of the Holt Library of Science Series III. Harold Leland Goodwin, was a prolific author who wrote about space exploration and other technical matters For his entry in "Contemporary Authors," A scuba diver and Marine veteran of World War II who was at different times an official of the old Federal Civil Defense Administration, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Mr. Goodwin had considerable experience on which to draw. Mr. Goodwin's factual books included "The Science Book of Space Travel," published in 1955, "Space: Frontier Unlimited," published in 1962, and "Challenge of the Seven Seas," which he wrote with Sen. Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.) and which appeared in 1966. Mr. Goodwin attended the Elliot Radio Academy. In 1940, he came to Washington as a correspondent for Trans Radio News Service. Following his service as a combat correspondent in the Marine Corps in World War II, he went to Manila as a State Department official. From 1951 to 1958, he was a public affairs official in the Federal Civil Defense Administration, where he worked on nuclear tests. In 1954, he was one of 10 young men in government chosen for the Arthur S. Flemming Award. In 1958, Mr. Goodwin was named science adviser to the U.S. Information Agency. In 1961, he joined NASA, and in 1967 he went to the National Science Foundation as deputy director of the National Sea Grant Program. In 1970, the program was transfered to NOAA and Mr. Goodwin went with it. More

The eighth and last leader of the Soviet Union, he was General Secretary of the governing Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985 until 1991. He was the country's head of state from 1988 until 1991, serving as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet from 1988 to 1989, Chairman of the Supreme Soviet from 1989 to 1990, and President of the Soviet Union from 1990 to 1991. Ideologically a socialist, he initially adhered to Marxism-Leninism although following the Soviet collapse moved toward social democracy. More

He came to Princeton in 2003 after earning his A.B. (1996) and his Ph.D. (2001) from Harvard University. His first book is a cultural history of Mendeleev in the context of Imperial St. Petersburg, A Well-Ordered Thing: Dmitrii Mendeleev and the Shadow of the Periodic Table. He has also worked extensively in the early history of nuclear weapons, and is the author of Five Days in August: How World War II Became a Nuclear War, a history of the atomic bombings of Japan during World War II, and an international history of nuclear intelligence, Red Cloud at Dawn: Truman, Stalin, and the End of the Atomic Monopoly.
