Orangeburg, SC: Sandlapper Publishing, Inc., 1986. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Trade paperback. [6],iii, [3], 411, [1] pages. Author's Note. Glossary. First printing of author's first book, a novel about training for and fighting in Nam. "This book is dedicated not to the reasons, whatever they were; nor to the outcome, whatever it was; nor to the events which are yet to be shaped, whatever they will be; but, simply, to the efforts of those who, in the heat and the mud and the blood, went and did their very best." "Mike Billingsley volunteered for officer training and combat duty in Vietnam with the U.S. Marine Corps. Billingsley led his men through the jungles and the rice paddies, discovering along the way that men are built of more than blood and bone. He discovered that he could be bent, but not broken, by the rigors of warfare and the emotional strain of the Vietnam war. [The book] is a thrilling fictional account of a young Atlanta man's experience. Gerald L. Gillis has skillfully juxtaposed action with emotion in the battlezone and deals sensitively with the emotional tension that afflicted the men in the field and continued to plague them after their return home." - from the rear outer cover. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Gerald L. Gillis is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and holds degrees from the University of Georgia and the University of Tampa. He served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1970 to 1973. H. Bent, But Not Broken is his first novel. - from the rear outer cover. More

Mason, IL: Ronald G. Goddard and Lulu Publishing Services, 2017. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Hardcover. xv, [1], 407, [1] pages. Maps. Photographs. Signed with sentiment on the free end page. Post card and business card promotional material laid in. Minor DJ wear noted. Ronald G. Goddard grew up seeing Hollywood movies that showed American troops boarding ships and going off to World War II with bands playing and well-wishers swarming docks to give soldiers rousing sendoffs. But when his troop transport ship left San Diego Harbor for Vietnam in March 1967, there were no patriotic farewells. It would be a chilling wake-up call for Goddard and his fellow marines of Golf Company, 2nd Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines. He shares an accurate account of their experiences in this autobiography. From being issued an M16 rifle that jammed to being baptized in a blaze of fire on the front lines, he reveals what he learned about fighting the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Regular Army troops in the rice paddies and jungles from DaNang to the DMZ. At nineteen years old, Goddard was a corporal leading squad sized patrols. More

Becket. Goulden was a member of the U.S. Army, where he was trained in counter-intelligence. Later he entered journalism, working for The Dallas Morning News. At The Philadelphia Inquirer, he worked first as an investigative reporter and later as head of the Washington bureau. He became a freelance writer in 1968 and wrote for a number of publications, including Harper's, The Nation, The Washingtonian, and The Washington Times. The Gulf of Tonkin incident was an international confrontation that led to the United States engaging more directly in the Vietnam War. It involved both a proven confrontation on August 2, 1964, carried out by North Vietnamese forces in response to covert operations in the coastal region of the gulf, and a second, claimed confrontation on August 4, 1964, between ships of North Vietnam and the United States in the waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Originally American claims blamed North Vietnam for both attacks. Later investigation revealed that the second attack never happened; the American claim is that it was based mostly on erroneously interpreted communications intercepts. The outcome was the passage of the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, which granted U.S. President Johnson the authority to assist any Southeast Asian country whose government was considered to be jeopardized by "communist aggression" More

Zalin Grant is a co-founder, and serves as Editorial Director, of Pythia Press. The Phoenix Program was a program designed and coordinated by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) during the Vietnam War, involving cooperation between American, South Vietnamese and Australian militaries. The program was designed to identify and destroy the Viet Cong (VC) via infiltration, torture, capture, counter-terrorism, interrogation, and assassination. The Phoenix Program was premised on the idea that infiltration had required local support from non-combat civilian populations. Criticisms arose regarding the Phoenix Program, including the use of torture and its being exploited for personal politics. More
