J Malan Heslop (18 June 1923 in Taylor, Weber County, Utah – 29 July 2011 Salt Lake City, Utah) was a World War II combat photographer who documented evidence of Nazi war crimes. He later served as managing editor of the Deseret News. Dell Van Order was a professional journalist for 41 years -- and LDS Church News editor for 23 of those. The two produced seven books together. This work is focused on the experiences of a number of Latter-day Saint prisoners of the Vietnam War. Eight former prisoners of war were interviewed for this book: Major Robert D. Jeffrey; Captain Larry Chesley; Major Jay R. Jensen; Lieutenant Commander David J. Rollins, Major Jay C. Hess, Charles E. Willis (Civilian); Commander Dale H. Osborne; and Captain Lynn R. Beens. There are also chapters on The Hanoi Hilton, The Power of Involvement, and Watching and Waiting. After the war, Risner wrote the book Passing of the Night detailing his seven years at the Hanoi Hilton. Indeed, a considerable literature emerged from released POWs after repatriation, depicting Hoa Lo and the other prisons as places where such atrocities as murder; beatings; broken bones, teeth and eardrums; dislocated limbs; starvation; serving of food contaminated with human and animal feces; and medical neglect of infections and tropical disease occurred. These details are revealed in accounts by McCain (Faith of My Fathers), Denton, Alvarez, Day, Risner, Stockdale and dozens of others. More
