Washington DC: The National Academies Press, 2009. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Trade paperback. xiv, 165, [1] pages. A Note on Terminology. Footnotes. Boxes. List of Acronyms. H.R. 1585. The government's first Cooperative Threat Reduction (CTR) programs were created in 1991 to eliminate the former Soviet Union's nuclear, chemical, and other weapons and prevent their proliferation. The programs have accomplished a great deal: deactivating thousands of nuclear warheads, neutralizing chemical weapons, converting weapons facilities for peaceful use, and redirecting the work of former weapons scientists and engineers, among other efforts. The programs must be expanded to other regions and fundamentally redesigned as an active tool of foreign policy that can address contemporary threats from groups that are that are agile, networked, and adaptable. Global Security Engagement proposes how this goal can best be achieved. To meet the magnitude of new security challenges, particularly at the nexus of weapons of mass destruction and terrorism, Global Security Engagement recommends a new, more flexible, and responsive model that will draw on a broader range of partners than current programs have. Moscow: The People's Commissariat of Justice of the U.S.S.R., 1937. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Hardcover. 22 cm. [8], 580 pages. Cover very worn and soiled. Hindges weak. Edges rubbed and corners bumped. Some moisture staining at bottom (all pages separate and text complete). This second purge trial involved 17 lesser figures including Karl Radek, Yuri Pyatakov and Grigory Sokolnikov. Alexander Beloborodov was also arrested and intended to be tried along with Radek, but did not make the confession required of him, and so he was not produced in court. Thirteen of the defendants were eventually executed by shooting. The rest received sentences in labor camps. Radek was spared as he implicated others, including Nikolai Bukharin, Alexei Rykov, and Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky, setting the stage for the Trial of Military and Trial of the Twenty One. Radek provided the pretext for the purge on a massive scale with his testimony that there was a "third organization separate from the cadres which had passed through [Trotsky's] school" as well as "semi-Trotskyites, quarter-Trotskyites, one-eighth-Trotskyites, people who helped us, not knowing of the terrorist organization but sympathizing with us, people who from liberalism, from a Fronde against the Party, gave us this help." By the third organization, he meant the last remaining former opposition group called Rightists led by Bukharin. At the time, many Western observers who attended the trials said that they were fair and that the guilt of the accused had been established. They based this assessment on the confessions of the accused, which were given in open court, without any apparent evidence that they had been tortured or drugged. More

Bethesda, MD: The Koby Mandell Foundation, 2005. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Ephemera. I sheet of light green paper, 11 inches by 8.5 inches, printed on one side only. This is an extremely rare item of Cal Ripken ephemera, as 'flyers' such as this rarely survived past the date of the commemorative event. It has a photo of Cal Ripken and an illustration. In addition to the title text, the bottom third (approximately) has text about the event, location, schedule, Tribute Journal and ticket opportunities. The murders of Koby Mandell and Yosef Ishran occurred on 8 May 2001, when two Jewish teenagers, Yaakov "Koby" Mandell and Yosef Ishran, were killed on the outskirts of the Israeli settlement of Tekoa in the West Bank, where they lived with their families. The identity of the killers has never been determined, though Israel and a number of sources state that Palestinian terrorists were responsible. Koby Mandell was an Israeli-American, his family having emigrated from the United States to Israel in 1996, and the murders resulted in legislation by the U.S. Congress aimed at strengthening the U.S. response to the killing of Americans overseas. In response to his death, Koby's parents set up the Koby Mandell Foundation to provide support for families bereaved by terrorist attacks. More
