The supersedes AFM 64-3, 16 July 1962, as amended. This presents the state-of-knowledge, state-of-practice, and to an extent the state-of-the-art towards the end of the Vietnam War era. It updates the previous 1962 version which was issues just as U.S. military involvement in the Southeast Asia conflicts were increasing. This manual was for student use in Air Force formal survival training courses. It describes climatic and topographical conditions and vegetations and animal life in all geographical areas--land and sea. It also explains what personnel must do to survive in these areas, and how and why this must be done. The contents include Chapter 1 The Will and Ability to Survive; 2 General Survival: Early Considerations, Survival Medicine, Clothing, Shelter, Fire Making, and Special Equipment, Water and Food, Orientation, Travel; 3 Land Survival--Moist Tropics; 4 Land Survival--Desert; 5 Land Survival--Arctic; 6 Survival on Sea Ice; 7 Survival at Sea; and 8 Survival in Areas Contaminated by Radiation. Includes attachments and an Index. Because of the global responsibilities of the United States Air Force, all Air Force personnel face the possibility of survival in a remote or desolate area of the world. It is the purpose of the Manual to prepare all personnel participant in flights on military aircraft for an intelligent approach to any possible survival situation. The reader is shown that nature and the elements are neither friendly nor hostile and that the training and attitudes he carries with him will determine his success in survival. The Manual opens with a discussion of the problems and techniques of general land survival; psychological problems, immediate action, camping and woodcraft, travel, clothing, signaling, food, and other related subjects. Then the ensuing chapters cover the special requirements for survival in the following areas: Arctic, dessert, Tropics, sea, and sea ice. Condition: Good.
