Bolger retired in 2013 from the Army. During his 35 years of service, he earned five Bronze Star Medals and the Combat Action Badge. His notable military commands included serving as Commanding General of the Combined Security Transition Command in Afghanistan and Commander of the NATO Training Mission in Afghanistan (2011-2013); Commanding General of the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas; the Coalition Military Assistance Training Team in Iraq (2005–06); and U.S. Army Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations. He is also the author of books, such as Dragons at War, Why We Lost, Americans at War, The Battle for Hunger Hill, and Death Ground. Describes the experiences of a group of soldiers at the intensive simulated combat exercises at the Army's National Training Center in the Mojave Desert. Derived from the Library Journal: The National Training Center (NTC) at Ft. Irwin, California, provides the most realistic military training available apart from actual warfare. U.S. battalion-size units participate in mock battles against similar units trained to use Soviet tactics. Everything is set up as it would be in war; "kills" are decided electronically. Bolger was a company commander in the 2-34th during its two-weeks' training at NTC. He tells what happened, both good and bad. Bolger writes well, and the reader gets the feel of the problems and strains of actual combat, especially in regard to how the reality of war can destroy good planning. Anyone interested in military affairs will like this book. Condition: Very good / Very good.
