Paul Carell (born Paul Karl Schmidt; 2 November 1911, Kelbra – 20 June 1997) was a German propagandist who was the chief press spokesman for Joachim von Ribbentrop's Foreign Ministry during the Nazi era. In this capacity during World War II, he maintained close ties with the Wehrmacht, while he served in the Allgemeine-SS (General SS). One of his specialities was the "Jewish question". After the war, Carell became a successful author, although critics claim that his books romanticized and whitewashed the Wehrmacht. Schmidt was arrested on 6 May 1945 and interned for 30 months. It was left open whether he would appear as one indicted, or as a witness for the prosecution, during the war crimes trials. During the Ministries Trial, he finally appeared as a witness for the prosecution, and portrayed himself as a fighter for freedom of the press. Planned as the second part of a vast war trilogy, this volume presents the German war in Russia from the first dramatic Russian victory at Stalingrad to the total collapse of the German front in the summer of 1944. This edition contains color photos not present in later editions. Beginning with the battle of Kursk in July 1943, Carell traverses the vast expanse of the Russian War, from the siege of Leningrad and the fierce battles of the northern front, to the fourth battle of Kharkov, and the evacuation of the Crimea, a withdrawal forbidden by Hitler. The book ends in June of 1944 when the Soviet Armies reach the East Prussian frontier. Hundreds of photographs, situation and campaign maps, complete index, and comprehensive bibliography, add to this impressive account. Condition: Good / Good.
