The author’s note from the book flap: Many years ago I was aviation editor of the Dayton Daily News in the hometown of the Wrights – which also happens to be my home town. As aviation editor, naturally I knew Orville Wright as the first to fly an airplane, the same which he and his brother invented. Being something of an artist, and wondering what the heroes of flight looked like, and what they word as they took to the air, I began collecting all sorts of pictures showing these things. What kind of men and women were these who risked their lives – some for money, some for glory, and others for the sheer fun of it? For most of us the statistics of aviation, its achievement and “firsts” are all we get to see – and they are pretty dull reading. For the young it is perhaps even worse. But for me, who knew Orville Wright and others who made flying what it has become, there is a sense of adventure and personal experience that brought me to identify with these men and the women who challenged them. So I drew these likenesses of them and the very ship they flew to bring to all my readers that same thrill of having been there when it happened. Condition: Very good / Very good.
