Her father, Norvin, is a World War II veteran and former pastor and Bible teacher. Gracia graduated from Calvary Bible College in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1981, with a bachelor of science degree in Christian education. Gracia was married to Martin Burnham on May 28, 1983, and they graduated together from the New Tribes Mission Training Institute in Durant, Mississippi, in 1984. In March 1986, Martin and Gracia left the states for a mission aviation assignment with New Tribes Mission in Northern Luzon, Philippines. They worked as New Tribes missionaries in the Philippines from 1986 to May 2001. Gracia is author of the book "In the Presence of My Enemies", the story of the year she and Martin spent as hostages of the Abu Sayyaf in the jungles of the Philippines. The rescue attempt by the Philippine military resulted in Martin's death and Gracia's release. Gracia has authored a second book "To Fly Again", IN THE PRESENCE OF MY ENEMIES tells of the harrowing account of two missionaries held captive by the Muslim extremist sect Abu Sayyef. Burnham plays Christianity against the horrors she and her husband encounter, illustrating the ways in which her faith kept her alive. For American missionaries Martin and Gracia Burnham, what started out as a relaxing, once-in-a-lifetime getaway turned into one of the most horrific nightmares imaginable. Kidnapped by the Abu Sayyaf, a terrorist group with ties to Osama bin Laden, the Burnhams were snatched away from friends and family and thrust into a life on the run in the Philippine jungle. During a perilous year in captivity, they faced near starvation, constant exhaustion, frequent gun battles, cold-hearted murder—and intense soul-searching about a God who sometimes seemed to have forgotten them. In this gripping firsthand account of faith, love, and struggle in the face of unnervingly casual brutality, you’ll go behind the scenes of a real-life drama, told by the least likely survivor. You’ll learn about the methods and motives of a radical terrorist group whose members are determined to meet their objectives. Condition: Very good / Very good.
