From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: George Washington Cable (October 12, 1844 January 31, 1925) was an American novelist notable for the realism of his portrayals of Creole life in his native Louisiana. His fiction has been thought to anticipate that of William Faulkner. William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 May 11, 1920) was an American realist author and literary critic. Nicknamed "The Dean of American Letters", he was particularly known for his tenure as editor of the Atlantic Monthly as well as his own prolific writings, including the Christmas story "Christmas Every Day" and the novel The Rise of Silas Lapham. Joel Chandler Harris (December 9, 1845 July 3, 1908) was an American journalist, fiction writer, and folklorist best known for his collection of Uncle Remus stories. Harris was born in Eatonton, Georgia, where he served as an apprentice on a plantation during his teenage years. He spent the majority of his adult life in Atlanta working as an associate editor at the Atlanta Constitution. General Charles King, (October 12, 1844: Albany, NY ~ March 17, 1933: Milwaukee, Wisconsin). Soldier--King, who was credited with seventy years of active military service, was the only soldier in American history to serve in five American wars: The Civil War, Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Philippine Insurrection and World War I. Novelist--Author of over 60 books and hundreds of articles and short stories. His novels, although they all follow virtually the same plot, draw from personal experience and are exciting narratives full of accurate, detailed descriptions of army life and Indian wars in the American West. Don Carlos Buell (March 23, 1818 November 19, 1898) was a career United States Army officer who fought in the Seminole War, the Mexican-American War, and the American Civil War. Buell led Union armies in two great Civil War battles Shiloh and Perryville. The nation was angry at his failure to defeat the outnumbered Confederates after Perryville, or to secure East Tennessee. Historians concur that he was brave and industrious, and a master of logistics, but was too cautious and too rigid to meet the great challenges he faced in 1862. Buell was relieved of field command in late 1862 and made no more significant military contributions. Also in this volume are poems by Emma Lazarus; Robert Underwood Johnson; and Sidney Lanier and an Open Letter from James Russell Lowell and others on International Copyright. Condition: Fair.
