From an on-line posting: "Samuel Brannen is a senior fellow in the International Security Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), where his research focuses on U.S. defense and national security strategy and policy, Turkey, and Iraq. Prior to rejoining CSIS in May 2013, Brannen served at the Pentagon as special assistant to the principal deputy under secretary of defense for policy. In that position, he advised and supported the second-ranking U.S. defense policy official on a range of defense and national security matters. From July 2010 to September 2012, Brannen was country director for Turkey, Cyprus, and Malta in the Office of Secretary of Defense. He also served as a staff member for the Independent Commission on the Security Forces of Iraq, chaired by General (Ret. ) James L. Jones. Brannen holds a B.A. in political science from Trinity University (San Antonio, TX) and an M.A. in international affairs from the George Washington University. He has been awarded the Office of the Secretary of Defense Medal for Exceptional Public Service four times and has received the Department of State Superior Service Award and Secretary of Defense Award for Excellence."
