Taste: Acquiring What Money Can't Buy

New York, NY: Truman Talley Books, 2007. Hardcover. Glued binding. Paper over boards. With dust jacket. [8], 232 p. Index. 'Good taste' is synonymous with success in all fields of life. It's not a question of money, but of a trained eye. Taste is proportion. Taste is civility. Taste is the mot juste. Taste is in play wherever educated people gather. Taste treats men and women, friends and strangers considerately. Taste cannot be bought, but only learned and practiced. In our modern times, the elegance and taste that characterised and defined such contemporary figures as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis has been overshadowed by gaudy wealth. But Tish Baldrige reminds us of the hallmarks of taste and its continued importance today. "Taste" is a book that, today, has its perfect author and proponent in Letitia "Tish" Baldrige, a Taste and Manners Icon for at least 50 years. Her appearances on TV talk shows have steadily increased, most recently on "Good Morning, America." This book was inscribed by the author to Anne Marie Marans. It is believe to have belonged to the woman of that name who was associated with National Public Radio. Excerpts from an obituary posted on-line: "Anne Marie Marans, died in Washington, D.C. on May 20, 2009. [she was] the wife of J. Eugene (Gene) Marans, From the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s, Anne Marie had an active professional career in arts administration. Her principal affiliation was with National Public Radio (NPR) in Washington, D.C., where she served for many years as assistant director of cultural programs. At NPR, Anne Marie worked on various music and drama projects, including the first visit to the United States of the Vienna State Opera and the adaptation of Star Wars for radio." From Wikipedia: "Letitia Baldrige (February 9, 1926 October 29, 2012) was an American etiquette expert and public relations executive who was most famous for serving as Jacqueline Kennedy's Social Secretary. Known as the "Doyenne of Decorum", she wrote a newspaper column, ran her own PR firm, and, along with updating Amy Vanderbilt's Complete Book of Etiquette, she published 20 books and appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and the cover of Time Magazine."
