USSR Report, Space Biology and Aerospace Medicing, Vol.15, No. 1, January-February 1981, JPRS 77513, 5 March 1981
Arlington, VA: U.S. Joint Publications Research Service. Presumed first edition/first printing thus. Wraps. 147 p. Includes illustrations. Names in ink on front cover. Staple bound. This report contains articles concerning the selection and training of cosmonauts; evaluation and analysis of accumulated data to facilitate the on-going transition from orbital to interplanetary flights; research aimed at guaranteeing safety on long flights and reliability of the human component of the "man-spaceship" system; space psychology and physiology; environmental problems and control (spacecraft habitability, effects of radiation and weightlessness, etc. ) and telemetry. The Joint Publications Research Service (JPRS) was a United States government defense-funded organization that was absorbed into the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) but its funding and personnel did not transfer. For all practical purposes it ceased its massive operations (80, 000 reports since 1957) in 1970, and gradually wound down to virtually nothing under FBIS by 1997. Both FBIS and JPRS are notable representatives of the value of Open Source Intelligence or OSINT, but also examples of how poorly funded such endeavors can be when the emphasis remains on secrecy and technology instead of openness. Condition: Good. No dust jacket. Signed by previous owner. Cover has some wear and soiling.
