Bhupendra Jasani has an MSc in nuclear physics and a Ph.D. in nuclear physics and nuclear medicine. He joined the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) in Sweden in February 1972 before joining, in October 1987, the Royal United Services Institute for Defence Studies, London. In 1984 he conceptualized the Western European Union Satellite Centre, the concept that was realized in 1991 when the Centre was established near Madrid, Spain where he worked training the image interpreters. The Centre is now known as the European Union Satellite Centre supporting the European Union and is one of the key institutions for European Union’s Security and Defence policy. In 1990, he joined the Department of War Studies, King’s College London, University of London where he developed the use of commercial remote sensing satellites for applications to monitor multilateral arms control treaties, confidence building measures and peacekeeping operations by, for example, the United Nations. In 2003 the European Commission (EC) established a study called the Global Monitoring for Security and Stability in which he coordinated treaty monitoring and early warning of conflicts and natural disasters projects using commercial remote sensing satellites. This is now successfully completed. He was a part of an EC funded project, HAWKEYE, which dealt with the development of an air- and space-based hyper-spectral sensor. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is an international institute based in Sweden, dedicated to research into conflict, armaments, arms control and disarmament. Established in 1966, SIPRI provides data, analysis and recommendations, based on open sources, to policymakers, researchers, media and the interested public. SIPRI is based in Stockholm. In the University of Pennsylvania's 2013 Global Go To Think Tanks Report, SIPRI is ranked the fifth most influential think tank in the world, after the Brookings Institution, Chatham House, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Only two years after Sputnik, weapons were created for attacking spacecraft. These were based on land. But now there is talk of weapons in space-instant-kill beams like lasers. President Reagan has offered a vision of new inventions that could stop nuclear missile attacks. But will they work? Can lasers make nuclear weapons obsolete? Or would they merely be used to wage Stars Wars. This is mainly the story of the military use of space. It shows how the new technology could trigger nuclear world war. Condition: Good.
