An obituary of Dr. James E. Carothers is on page ii. Dr. Carothers spent the bulk of his career at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He retired in 1991 but served as the Laboratory Archivist from 1992 to 1999 when he fully retired due to health issues. Dr. Carothers was one of the icons at the Nevada Test Site. Bob Knipes joined the USAF in 1950. He rose to the rank of 1st Lt. via the USAF cadet program. Flew in B-47, B-36, and B-52s. He left the Air Force in 1957. Received BS degree in Physics from the University of Tampa. Upon graduating he went to work at the Nevada Test Site in 1965 and retired from there in 1993. The mining and construction of tunnels and shafts to contain U.S. underground nuclear tests is documented through a series of interviews of miners, construction crafts workers, engineers, and scientists. The original thrust of this publications was focused on the mining and drilling operations that took place at the Nevada Test Site for forty years. Both mining and drilling operations are inherently very high risk and very dangerous for personnel safety and equipment failure. Condition: Very good.
