New York: The Review of Reviews Company, 1914. Statesman Edition. Hardcover. Frontis, [6], 299, [1] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Cover has slight wear and soiling. This second volume of this classic study covers operations on the ocean in 1814, operations on the Great Lakes in 1814, operations in 1815, and the Battle of New Orleans. The Battle of New Orleans was a series of engagements fought between December 14, 1814 and January 18, 1815, constituting the last major battle of the War of 1812. American combatants, commanded by Major General Andrew Jackson, prevented a much larger British force, commanded by Admiral Alexander Cochrane and General Edward Pakenham, from seizing New Orleans and the territory of the Louisiana Purchase. The Treaty of Ghent had been signed on December 24, 1814, and hostilities continued without the involved parties knowing about the Treaty, until January 18 by which time all of the British forces had retreated, putting an end to the Battle of New Orleans. This was volume Ten of the Statesman Edition. This edition was published with the permission of the President through special arrangement with The Century Co., Messrs. Charles Scribner's Sons and G. P. Putnam's Sons. The Review of Reviews was a noted family of monthly journals founded in 1890-1893 by British reform journalist William Thomas Stead (1849–1912). Established across three continents in London (1891), New York (1892) and Melbourne (1893), the Review of Reviews, American Review of Reviews and Australasian Review of Reviews represented Stead’s dream of a global publishing empire. The American Review of Reviews was edited by the American academic, journalist, and reformer, Albert Shaw. Shaw was part of the first generation of academic reformers, which included Woodrow Wilson (who was his classmate at Johns Hopkins University). Condition: Very good.
