Marc Friedlaender, was a professor of English and a coeditor of the Adams Papers. He was at Harvard Law School for two years following our graduation, before entering the academic field. He earned an M.A. in English at Harvard and then a Ph.D. at the Univ. of Chicago. He taught at Tulane and then was a professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro for 20 years. Later he taught at Vassar. In 1959, he helped found the Athenaeum Publishers of New York, of which he was an officer and an editor until 1965, when he moved to Boston to become coeditor of the Adams Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society. He edited and coedited 12 volumes of the Adams Papers and was recognized as an authority on the Adams family. “Adams wrote candidly and well about a wide range of subjects; the editors and publishers have made his writing available in the clearest possible form so that many may easily experience the particular delight of any outstanding diary the opportunity to see a man and his time through his own eyes and thoughts.” Baltimore Sun
“Although the editorial scholarship continues to be staggering…it never seems to be obtrusive, never unnecessary scholarship. The editors are the true heirs of an important part of the family tradition initiated by Charles Francis Adams: its legacy of selfless and creative editorial scholarship.” Peter Shaw, American Scholar
“Most readers will find their fascination in the picture that Adams gives of an important American family and the life of one intelligent, highly individual member of it…the work is a solid and graceful achievement in scholarly publishing. His is one of the great diaries.” William Bentinck-Smith, Harvard Magazine.
