The National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA) [Formerly the American Defense Preparedness Association] is an association for the United States government and the defense industry. Based in Arlington, Virginia, NDIA was established in 1919 as a result of the inability of the defense industry to scale up the war effort during World War I. It connects government officials, military and industry professionals, and organizations that represent the branches of the armed forces, homeland security, and first responders. The NDIA publishes a magazine, the National Defense, and holds over 80 symposia a year. Articles in this issue address C3 and SDI, and the Bionic Soldier, ABM Treaty-Permitted Activities (by Paul Nitze), Gallium Arsenide, Battlefield Refueling, SDI Countermeasures, Soviet Manned Spaceflight, Army Materiel Command, Robotics, Shipbuilding Technology, and Foreign Military Developments. Paul Henry Nitze (January 16, 1907 – October 19, 2004) was an American statesman who served as United States Deputy Secretary of Defense, U.S. Secretary of the Navy, and Director of Policy Planning for the U.S. State Department. He is best known for being the principal author of NSC 68 and the co-founder of Team B. He helped shape Cold War defense policy over the course of numerous presidential administrations. Following his term as Secretary of the Navy, he served as Deputy Secretary of Defense (1967–1969), as a member of the US delegation to the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) (1969–1973). Later, fearing Soviet rearmament, he opposed the ratification of SALT II (1979). Condition: Good.
