Candice Patricia Bergen (born May 9, 1946) is an American actress and former fashion model. She won five Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for her ten seasons as the title character on the CBS sitcom Murphy Brown (1988–98, 2018–present). She is also known for her role as Shirley Schmidt on the ABC drama Boston Legal. She was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Starting Over, and for the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Gandhi. Bergen began her career as a fashion model and appeared on the front cover of Vogue before she made her screen debut in the 1966 film The Group. She went on to star in The Sand Pebbles, Soldier Blue, Carnal Knowledge, and The Wind and the Lion. Her other film roles include Miss Congeniality, Sweet Home Alabama, The Women, Bride Wars, and Book Club. Derived from a Kirkus review: This second installment of the author’s autobiography focuses on the three great loves of her life: her two husbands and her daughter. When she met her first husband, French director Louis Malle. Less than a year after their first introduction the two were married. The showbiz woman was soon immersed in a world of elegance and high art alongside a dynamic man she affectionately calls a “cultural commando.” Bergen struggled with ambivalence over whether or not to have a family. At age 39, she gave birth to a daughter, Chloe, who would become even closer to Bergen than the globe-trotting Malle. Her career took off shortly afterward when she was chosen to play Murphy Brown. Her golden life ground to a temporary halt when Malle was diagnosed with a fatal brain disease. Bergen met her next husband, billionaire New York real estate developer Marshall Rose. Rose offered the actress entree among the New York City social elite. A glamorously bittersweet showbiz memoir. Condition: Very good / Very good.
