Advanced Computing and Modeling; LALP-92-104

Los Alamos, NM: Los Alamos National Laboratory, 1993. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Wraps. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. This is one sheet, folded at midpoint, with information/illustrations on all four sides. This brochure states that Los Alamos had a dedicated, multidisciplinary staff with the skills to develop and use a variety of sophisticated and versatile algorithms. This expertise, combined with world-class, high-performance computing facilities at Los Alamos, allowed the Laboratory to effectively model and simulate a wide range of problems important to industry. One application enabled the Laboratory to graphically present the instantaneous sea-surface temperature after approximately ten simulated years from a global ocean model that was developed for its massively parallel DM-200 supercomputer. The relevance to global warming analysis and scenario development was recognized. Examples of the Los Alamos Technology Base and areas of expertise include: Software Documentation, Stress, Strain, Design, Manufacturing, Quantum Mechanical Methods, Optical Networks, and Database Management. Advanced Computing and Modeling was related to the Advanced Simulation and Computing program (ASC) that develops and provides to the Stockpile Stewardship Program the tools to underpin the use of simulations with confidence in assessing the current and future stockpile. ASC simulations are central to stewardship of the U. S. nuclear stockpile in the absence of nuclear testing. NNSA's ability to model the complexity of nuclear weapons systems is essential to establish confidence in the performance of our aging stockpile. Through close coordination with other agencies, ASC tools play an important role in supporting global nuclear security, emergency response, and nuclear forensics. Condition: Very good.
