The U.S. Army Coast Artillery Corps (CAC) was responsible for coastal, harbor, and anti-aircraft defense of the United States and its possessions between 1901 and 1950. In 1905, after the Spanish–American War, President Roosevelt appointed a board on fortifications, under Secretary of War William Howard Taft. The board recommended fortifications in territories acquired from Spain. This text has been prepared for the Coast Artillery Journal for the officer who desires in one volume for easy reference much of the information which a well qualified Coast Artillery officer should have. This publication should prove especially useful to Reserve and National Guard officers who do not have complete reference libraries readily available.
