Eugene Cordell was known as an outstanding Maryland medical historiographer, physician, author and teacher. At the outbreak of Civil War he entered the Confederate Army. He was wounded in action at Winchester, Virginia, on September 19, 1864. He was taken prisoner in 1865 and held until the war's end. He graduated from the University of Maryland Medical School in 1868. He subsequently went on to serve as attending physician in the Baltimore General Dispensary. Then he served as Librarian at the Medical and Chirurgical Faculty of Maryland. He practiced medicine in Baltimore during the 1870's. He went on to help produce the Maryland Medical Journal. He produced many works including the Medical Annals of Maryland. He joined the faculty and held the position of Professor of the History of Medicine. The Medical Annals of Maryland is a huge work ? almost 900 pages! It is an exhaustive compilation of the history of medicine in Maryland and chronicles the first 100 years of MedChi?s existence. There are small and large biographies of every member of MedChi from its first days. The book has 32 illustrations, mostly of physicians, but also of localities and rooms. The plan for this work embraces three divisions: (1) An historical section, (2) a biographical section, and (3) a chronological section. The first deals with the annals of the Society during the century of its existence. The second includes all who have, at any time so far as the records show, been members of the society--about 2400 in all. In the third part , extensive use has been made of Quinan's chronology, such additions being made to it as to bring it down to the centennial year. Condition: Very good.
