National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. Starting with its January 1905 publication of several full-page pictures of Tibet in 1900–1901, the magazine changed from being a text-oriented publication to featuring extensive pictorial content. Included in this issue are: The Danube, Highway of Races with 54 Illustrations by Melville Chater; Alpine Villagers of Austria with 15 Natural-Color Photographs by Hans Hildenbrand; Bethlehem and the Christmas Story with 27 Illustrations by John D. Whiting; Along the Way of the Magi with 14 Natural-Color Photographs by G. E. Matson; The Secret of the Southwest Solved by Talkative Tree Rings with 34 Illustrations by Andrew Ellicott Douglass; and The Society's New Map of Europe by Gilbert Grosvenor. Melville Chater was a well known National Geographic magazine writer who in 1919 was sent to report on condition in Armenia where a humanitarian catastrophe unfolded in the wake of World War I.
