Substantial spine chipping noted. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: The Bahamas, Isles of the Blue-Green Sea with Maps and 52 Illustrations (38 in Color) by Carleton Mitchell and R. Anthony Stewart; Marsh Dwellers of Southern Iraq with Maps and 29 Illustrations (18 in Color) by Wilfred Thesiger and Gavin Maxwell; Arizona's Window on Wildlife with 13 Illustrations by Lewis Wayne Walker; Huntington Library, California's Treasure House with 19 Illustrations (15 in Color) by David S. Boyer; and Exploring Our Neighbor World, the Moon with 15 Illustrations by Donald H. Menzel. Sir Wilfred Thesiger was a British soldier and travel writer who was a colonial explorer in the tradition of Sir Richard Burton and T.E. Lawrence. His most important writings, based on his travels to Africa and Asia, include descriptions of the societies of the Bedouins of the Arabian Peninsula and the Marsh Arabs of southern Iraq. Carleton Mitchell, American yachtsman was an accomplished writer and photographer, Mitchell chronicled his sailing adventures in several books. Condition: Fair.
