He was a frequent contributor on Arab affairs to specialized periodicals. This book has been translated from the original Hebrew edition and extensively revised. The author presents a detailed analysis of military coups d'etat, commencing with a survey of their history from 1936 to February 1966 in Syria. The author analyzes patterns of military coups d'etat and, in particular, the nature of military dictatorship and points of similarity and difference between coups d'etat in the Arab world and other regions. The author also attempts to define the role of army officers in the unfolding of Arab history: to what extent are they maintaining a tradition, and to what extent are they revolutionaries, or simply opportunists?
