Development of the United States Capital; Addresses Delivered in the auditorium of the United States Chamber of Commerce Building, Washington, D.C. at Meetings Held to Discuss the Development of the National Capital, April 25-26, 1929

Washington DC: U. S. Government Printing Office, 1930. Presumed First Edition, First printing [only 6500 House of Representatives copies printed]. Hardcover. [6], 92, [2] pages. Illustrations. Maps. This is House Document No. 35 of the 71st Congress, 1st Session. Cover has some wear. This includes a scarce address by Secretary of the Treasury Andrew Mellon. The purpose of the meeting was so that those representing the Government could consider plans to make more beautiful the city of Washington. Twenty-five years previously the key speaker was President Theodore Roosevelt. Those plans had not been sufficiently acted upon. Secretary Mellon, in his address, stated that "economy demands that the Government's activity should be adequately housed in buildings owned by the Government itself." The responsibility for the condemnation and purchase of sites and erection of most of these buildings has been placed by Congress on the Treasury Department and became, therefore, an integral part of Treasury activities. President Hoover gave an address entitled "Washington, The City Beautiful". Senator Smoot (Chairman of the Public Buildings Commission) gave an address on "Appropriations for Public Buildings". Congressman Richard Elliott (Chairman House Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds) gave an address entitled "Congress and the Nation's Capital." Milton Medary (Member of the National Capital Park and Planning Commission) gave an address entitled "Making a Capital City." Charles Moore (Chairman of the National Commission of Fine Arts) gave an address entitled "Origin of the Plan of 1901." Edward Bennett (Chairman of the Architectural Consultants, Treasury Department) gave an address on "The Architecture of the Capital." Major Layson E. Atkins (Assistant Engineer Commissioner of the District of Columbia) gave an address on "The Municipal Center." Congressman Louis Cramton gave an address on "Our National Capital." Condition: Good.
