Bentley, who served on the staff of the National Museum under Dr. Jenness. Diamond Jenness, CC FRCGS (February 10, 1886, Wellington, New Zealand – November 29, 1969, Chelsea, Quebec, Canada) was one of Canada's greatest early scientists and a pioneer of Canadian anthropology. In 1926, Jenness succeeded Canada's first Chief Anthropologist, Dr. Edward Sapir, as Chief of Anthropology at the National Museum of Canada, a position he retained until his retirement in 1948. Between 1920 and 1970, Jenness authored more than 100 works on Canada's Inuit and First Nations people. Dr. Diamond Jenness had two objets in view: first to select tales that appear to possess literary merit, and second to choose them from every part of Canada so that the reader can gain a conception of the Indian's outlook on the universe around him. The arrangement of the tales is geographical, beginning with Eastern Canada, passing westward across the Prairies to the Pacific Coast, and from there north to the Arctic. Among the sources of the tales in this work are: Iroquois, Eskimo, Ojibwa, Carrier, Sarcee, Sekani, and Salish.

Corn Gods and Goddesses. The majority of corn deities are female and associated with fertility. They include the Cherokee goddess Selu; Yellow Woman and the Corn Mother goddess Iyatiku of the Keresan people of the American Southwest; and Chicomecoatl, the goddess of maize who was worshiped by the Aztecs of Mexico. The Maya believed that humans had been fashioned out of corn, and they based their calendar on the planting of the cornfield.
