Glossary Jeffery Deaver is the fifth author to continue Ian Fleming's legacy by penning a James Bond Novel. Red mark on bottom edge. Jeffery Deaver (born May 6, 1950) is an American mystery and crime writer. He has a bachelor of journalism degree from the University of Missouri and a J.D. degree from Fordham University and originally started working as a journalist. He later practiced law before embarking on a career as a novelist. He has been awarded the Steel Dagger and Short Story Dagger from the British Crime Writers' Association and the Nero Wolfe Award, and he is a three-time recipient of the Ellery Queen Reader's Award for Best Short Story of the Year and a winner of the British Thumping Good Read Award. His novels have appeared on bestseller lists around the world, including The New York Times, The Times, Italy's Corriere della Sera, The Sydney Morning Herald, and The Los Angeles Times. Deaver's most popular series features Lincoln Rhyme, a quadriplegic detective, and NYPD Detective Amelia Sachs. Deaver was chosen to write a new James Bond novel:[8] Carte Blanche[9] is set in 2011 and was published on May 25, 2011.[10] He is the second American author to write Bond novels, after Raymond Benson. James Bond, in his early thirties and already a veteran of the Afghan War, has been recruited to a new organization. Conceived in the post-9/11 world, it operates independent of M15, M16, and the ministry of Defense, its very existence deniable. Its aim is to protect the Realm, by any means necessary. A Night Action alert calls James Bond away from dinner with a beautiful woman. Headquarters has decrypted an electronic whisper about an attack scheduled for later in the week: Casualties estimated in the thousands, British interests adversely affected. An Agent 007 has been given carte blanche to do whatever it takes to fulfill his mission.

"Jeffery Deaver accepted one of the greatest literary challenges of the new millennium when he agreed to write a new James Bond novel. . . . With "Carte Blanche", [he] somehow manages to spin a top-notch 21st-century spy thriller while both respecting Bond and reinventing him."--"Washington Independent Review of Books"
