Enewetak Radiological Survey, Volumes II and III; NVO-140

Las Vegas, NV: United States Atomic Energy Commission, Nevada Operations Office, 1973. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Hardcover. [2], vii, unpaginated series of color illustrations and graphs. This is a rare surviving hardcopy of the original publication of the two volumes of the Appendix II - Survey Results by Island. Modern reproductions are generally of inferior quality/resolution. The microfiche transparencies at the back of volume III are not present. Cover has some wear and soiling. Heavy volumes but hinges remain strong. Minor edge soiling. The two volumes when stacked measure about 4 inches thick. The volumes contain a map of Enewetak Atoll, a Cross-reference list of island names, Individual photomap scale factors, Contour map key for use with the EG&G aerial radiological survey figures. Volume II contains the survey results for Alice, Belle, Clara, Daisy, Edna, Irene A, Irene B, Janet, Kate, Lucy, Percy, Mary, Nancy, Olive Pearl, Ruby, Sally, Tilda, Ursula, Vera, Wilma, and Yvonne A. Volume III contains the survey results for: Yvonne B, Yvonne C, Yvonne D, Yvonne E, Yvonne F, Sam, Tom, Uriah, Van, Alvin, Bruce, Clyde, David, Rex, Elmer A, Elmer B, Elmer D, Elmer D, Walt, Fred A, Fred B, Fred C, Fred D, Fred E, Fred F, Glenn, Henry, Irwin A, Irwin B, James, Keith, Leroy and a Summary of Experimental Data. The AEC has conducted a survey of the total radiological environment of Enewetak Atoll in order to provide:ide data for judgments as to whether or not all or any part of the Atoll can be safely reinhabited. More than 3300 samples from all parts of the marine, terrestrial, and atmospheric components of the Atoll environment were analyzed by instrumental and radiochemical methods. In addition, an aerial survey for gamma-radiation levels was conducted over all land areas. “Sr, 137Cs, 6oCo, and 3-3gPu are the predominant radioactive isotopes now present, but their distribution is far from uniform. Islands on the southern half of the Atoll from ALVIN to KEITH have levels of contamination comparable to or less than those due to world-wide fallout in the United States. On the northern half, islands ALICE to IRENE are most heavily contaminated, KATE to WILMA are least contaminated, and JANET is at an intermediate level. These radiological data have been combined with the best information currently available on the expected diet of the Enewetak people to estimate potential wholebody and bone doses to the population for six living patterns at 5-, lo-, 30-, and ‘70-yr intervals after return. Thirty year integral dose estimates for unmodified (i.e., current) conditions were shown is the document's Table A.

On September 7, 19’i2, at an Interagency meeting in Washington, the AEC agreed to assume responsibility for conducting this comprehensive radiological survey; the Department of Defense agreed to assume responsibility for conducting such cleanup operations as were required; and the Department of the Interior agreed to assume U. S. Government responsibility for rehabilitation and resettlement of the native population. This report describes the radiological survey which has been executed by the AEC as a consequence of the September 7 commitment and presents data which have been obtained from that survey. Recommendations for cleanup and/or other corrective action based on these data will be the subject of separate action by the Atomic Energy Commission. In Section II a fairly detailed description of the Enewetak Atoll and a history of the Enewetak people are presented to set the framework within which the Survey has be conducted. Section III contains a separate chapter for each major component of the Survey, including Plans, Aerial Survey, Terrestrial Soil and Radiation Survey, External Dose Estimation, Marine Survey, Terrestrial Biota Survey, Air Sampling, Engineering Survey, Analysis Program, Radiological Controls, and Dose Assessments. Section IV contains a Summary of Findings. The large number of photographs and
figures needed to present the data are contained in the Appendix as Volumes II and III.

This appendix is a compilation of radiological survey results for each of the islands in Enewetak Atoll. The information for each island includes a color aerial photograph, a series of photographs overprinted with survey data, and a set of analytical data. It should be noted that several islands (i.e., IRENE, YVONNE. ELMER, FRED, and IRWIN) have been subdivided into sections (e.g., IRENE A and IRENE B) because of their relatively large size. In addition, it should be pointed out that the sets of overprints are not necessarily the same for all islands. Thermoluminescent detectors (TLD’s), for example, were not used on all islands. For ease of comparison and clarity, the same data parameter for each island is overprinted on the same color of photograph. For a discussion of the techniques used in collecting the data presented on the photographic overprints, the reader is referred to the appropriate section in Vol. I of this document. A typical set of survey results is outlined below for ALICE, together with the page and figure designation scheme used. For example for ALICE there is information on current condition which is paired with a figure number, such as a.
