The United States Information Agency (USIA), which existed from 1953 to 1999, was a United States agency devoted to "public diplomacy". In 1999, USIA's broadcasting functions were moved to the newly created Broadcasting Board of Governors, and its exchange and non-broadcasting information functions were given to the newly created Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs at the U. S. Department of State. The agency was previously known overseas as the United States Information Service (USIS). As a USIS product, it was primarily produced for overseas distribution, and relatively few copies were available in the United States. This is a biography of President John F. Kennedy designed for advanced reading or conversation classes or for discussion groups. The text shows how President Kennedy's childhood, your, education, war experience, and service in both houses of the Congress prepared him ideally for the Presidency of the United States in the 1960's. It also discussed his major programs and the philosophy underlying them. The most unusual words have been defined in simple terms in the glossary. It was strongly suggested that all groups using this material should read through it together. Suggested questions for discussion based on each chapter separated have been included at the end of the narrative. There are also suggestions for simple research projects which would lead the group to an acquaintance with the materials about President Kennedy in the USIS or binational center library.
