Practical Guide Map of Washington; Based on the "Standard Guide" Ready Reference Map of Washington

Washington DC: B. S. Reynolds Co., 1904. Presumed First Edition, First printing thus. Single sheet, printed on one side. Format is approximately 17.5 inches by 14 inches, printed on one side only. Folded so that there are eight panels on this single sheet. Includes a Ready Reference Index that takes up about half of the upper right panel. It lists prominent institutions, railway stations, steamboats, buildings, monuments and statues and hotels. The United States Naval Observatory is in the upper left panel. The Zoological Park and Soldiers' Home Grounds are at the top boundary. The Navy Yard is in the lower right panel. Arlington National Cemetery is in the lower left panel. The boundaries between the four quadrants is in bold. Much of the map is captioned in terms of street names and numbers and places of significant interest. The Practical Guide was a booklet that included a fold-out map. The booklet is not present. This appears to have derived from the map in the booklet entitled the "Standard Guide" which was published in 1905. The B. S. Reynolds Company was a Washington, D. C. publishing company that specialized in postcards and lithographic guides. The company, formerly known as the Foster & Reynolds Company of 1202 D Street, NW, began putting out postcards in 1901 and became known for its views of the city’s monuments and buildings and of artworks in the city’s public buildings and museums. The company closed in 1948. Condition: Good.
