The approach taken in this study was to utilize as many information sources on blast injury as possible. The medical personnel consulted during this study included blast injury experts (physicians and physiologists) from the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). Also consulted were personnel vulnerability experts from the U.S. Army Ballistic Research Laboratory. These personnel had been involved in the definition, maintenance and evaluation of the personnel vulnerability criteria for the U.S. Army. Significant differences exist between the current U.S. and Soviet direct (primary) air blast injury and incapacitation criteria. Under the Soviet criteria, direct blast injuries occurs at much lower overpressure levels than under current U.S. criteria. This is especially true for incapacitation and loss of combat effectiveness. The result is that significantly different estimates of weapon effectiveness occur when Soviet criteria are applied. In this study, a detailed analysis and evaluation of the current U.S. and Soviet direct blast injury criteria was conducted. The goal of this was to improve the understanding of why the U.S. and Soviet criteria differ to such a large degree. Front this, it was hoped that it could be determined with of the direct blast criteria. U.S. or Soviet, more realistically represent the direct effects of air blast on personnel. Condition: Good.
