The struggle for control of the eastern waters of North Carolina during the War Between the States was a bitter, painful, and sometimes humiliating one for the Confederate States Navy. No better example exists of the classic axiom "too little too late." Burdened by the lack of adequate warships, construction facilities, and even ammunition itself, the South's naval arm nevertheless fought bravely and recklessly to halt the Federal invasion of North Carolina from the sea. Mr. Campbell has written numerous books about the Confederate Navy, among them Storm Over Carolina and Iron Courage: Confederate Ironclads in the War Between the States. R. Thomas Campbell is the author and editor of numerous books about the Confederate Navy during the Civil War, including The CSS H.L. Hunley: Confederate Submarine and Southern Service on Land and Sea: The Wartime Journal of Robert Watson, CSA/CSN. A member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, Campbell published his first work, Southern Thunder: Exploits of the Confederate States Navy, in 1996. Using firsthand accounts and published reports, the author chronicles significant military events from the war, including the Battle of Mobile Bay, and profiles the officers and sailors who manned the naval vessels. A critic in Publishers Weekly called the work "a solid introduction to a short-lived navy that cast a long shadow." Campbell served as editor for Southern Service on Land and Sea, a personal account of the Civil War. Watson, a carpenter and southern sympathizer living in Key West, Florida, first joined the Florida Coast Guard. He then served as an infantryman in Tennessee where he saw action at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. In 1864 he was transferred to the Confederate Navy and was taken prisoner by Union forces just one day before General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. "No historian of Florida will now be able to ignore this edition of Robert Watson's journal," observed Cecil B. Currey in the Journal of Southern History. "This is the interesting story of an interesting man." In Confederate Naval Forces on Western Waters: The Defense of the Mississippi River and Its Tributaries, Campbell looks at the men and ships that waged war on the Mississippi River and its tributaries. Joseph Derie, writing on the Civil War News Web site, remarked: "All of Campbell's books are highly readable and Confederate Naval Forces is no exception; his writing is always crisp and clear." The struggle for control of the eastern waters of North Carolina during the War Between the States was a bitter, painful, and sometimes humiliating one for the Confederate navy. No better example exists of the classic adage, Too little, too late. Burdened by the lack of adequate warships, construction facilities and even ammunition, nevertheless the South's naval arm fought bravely and recklessly to stem the tide of the Federal invasion of North Carolina from the sea. Storm Over North Carolina is the account of the Southern navy's struggle in North Carolina waters. It is a saga of crushing defeats interspersed with moments of brilliant victories. It is also the story of dogged determination and incredible perseverance in the face of overwhelming odds. Condition: Very Good.
