Benjamin Smart Warren, III was a graduate of St. Paul's School and the University of Virginia, both undergraduate and law schools. After service in the Marine Corps, he was a partner with the law firm Pattishall McAuliffe in Chicago and Washington, DC for more than 40 years. "Since 1191, Uolricus and Cuno de Gravinsried are the first mentioned of record, both by given and surname. The village of Grafenried, near Bern, is the first ancestral home of the family in Switzerland, and as early as the thirteenth century they were most numerous in that locality."--p. 18. Christopher (VI) deGraffenried was the first of the family to settle permanently in America. He married Barbara Tempest (née Needham) in 1714 at Charleston, South Carolina. They settled permanently in Prince Edward County, Virginia. Christopher died in 1742. Descendants lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Kansas and elsewhere. The Swiss branch of the de Graffenried family still lives in the area around Bern, Switzerland. Colonel Baron Victor de Graffenried and his son, Helmuth de Graffenried. Victor de Graffenried was involved in genealogical research with his American cousin, Thomas Pritchett de Graffenried. Upon the Baron's death in 1940, his son Helmuth de Graffenried began corresponding with Thomas P. de Graffenried. Thomas P. de Graffenried, of New York, is the author of multiple books on the history of the de Graffenried family. He was deeply involved in genealogical research of both the American and the Swiss branches of the de Graffenried family. Condition: Very good.
