Gift inscription, from Roman DeSanctis, a noted cardiologist, on fep! Author Webster Bull is a writer of institutional histories. He began his publishing career by founding Memoirs Unlimited in 1988, helping people write and publish their life stories. In 1998, he and his wife Katie Bull founded Commonwealth Editions, a publisher of nonfiction books about Boston, Cape Cod, and other New England destinations. Meanwhile, Webster focused on writing projects for families and larger organizations. The Mass General history, begun in 2007, is the most ambitious in this line of writing projects. Co-author Martha Bull is a 2007 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Chicago and, beginning in 2010, an MFA candidate at Columbia University. In between, she worked with her father Webster Bull on the Mass General history. This sweeping history, drawn from archival resources and personal interviews, traces the development of Massachusetts General Hospital from a hospital with only two doctors and a handful of patients to its present position as one of the most prestigious hospitals in the world, and the largest hospital-based biomedical research institution in the U. S. Today, Mass General is not merely a "quaternary care" mecca, for the treatment of patients with the rarest conditions; it is also a research powerhouse, where physician scientists search for everything from a cure for AIDS to the origins of life in the universe. In addition, it is one of the most sought-after places of training for young doctors. Massachusetts General Hospital (Mass General or MGH) is the original and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. It is the third oldest general hospital in the United States and has a capacity of 999 beds. With Brigham and Women's Hospital, it is one of the two founding members of Mass General Brigham, the largest healthcare provider in Massachusetts. Massachusetts General Hospital conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the world. It was ranked as the #8 best hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. Founded in 1811, the original hospital was designed by the famous American architect Charles Bulfinch. Only Pennsylvania Hospital (1751) and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's predecessor New York Hospital (1771) are older. John Warren, Professor of Anatomy and Surgery at Harvard Medical School, spearheaded the move of the medical school to Boston. Warren's son, John Collins Warren, a graduate of the University of Edinburgh Medical School, along with James Jackson, led the efforts to start the Massachusetts General Hospital, which was initially proposed in 1810 by Rev. John Bartlett, the Chaplain of the Almshouse in Boston. Because all those who had sufficient money were cared for at home, Massachusetts General Hospital, like most hospitals that were founded in the 19th century, was intended to care for the poor. A 30-year-old sailor was the first patient admitted to the hospital on 3 September 1821. During the mid-to-late 19th century, Harvard Medical School was located adjacent to Massachusetts General Hospital. The first American hospital social workers were based in the hospital. At the MGH, Dr. DeSanctis organized the first coronary care unit, and served as its Director for 10 years. He was the Director of Clinical Cardiology at the MGH from 1981-1998, and the Acting Chief of the Cardiac Unit from 1989-1991. He has played an integral role in teaching and training MGH cardiologists for the last half century as a Harvard professor. Dr. DeSanctis served as the James and Evelyn Jenks and Paul Dudley White Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Physician and Director of Clinical Cardiology, Emeritus at the MGH. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Cardiology. Condition: Very good / Very good.
