Selected Bibliography. Index. The author's first permanent job was at an outdoor living history museum in the Midwest called Old World Wisconsin. She started working there in 1982, and stayed for twelve years. Old World has over fifty restored buildings, beautifully situated on 576 acres within a state forest. It was the best training ground imaginable for an historical writer. Over the years,she worked in just about every exhibit. For most of my time at Old World Wisconsin she served as Curator of Interpretation and Collections. At the same time, she wrote historical fiction as a hobby. she spent over a decade working on her first nonfiction book, Too Afraid To Cry: Maryland Civilians in the Antietam Campaign. That project also provided inspiration for several novels, including my first published books: The Night Riders of Harpers Ferry and The Bravest Girl in Sharpsburg. She then took her career in a new direction: helping develop and produce instructional video programs for public television.
She subsequently earned an Emmy Award. Too Afraid to Cry: Maryland Civilians and the Antietam Campaign, took over a decade to research and write. Too Afraid to Cry focuses on the changes civilians were forced to make when the Civil War landed on their doorsteps. The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in the history of the United States, and while there are numerous military studies of the event, very few books discuss the effect the battle had on the people living in the area, according to Theresa McDevitt of Library Journal, who considered it a "fascinating topic." Sharon Seager, writing in Civil War History, praised Ernst's book, noting that "the writing is vivid, skillfully blending military and social history." Condition: Very good / Very good.
