They touch on subjects of war and religion, love and hate, courtship and marriage, death and divorce, courts and combats, food and foolishness, diplomacy and philosophy. The superiority of Negro stories lies in the fact that they include such a wide range of the human emotions....many of them are told for the first time in printed form. It is believed that the professional man, the club member, the lecturer, the student, the fun-maker, and most important of all--the lover of good-natured humor, will appreciate these stories about a people who are happy and hopeful, helpful and harmless, despite the injustices so often imposed upon them." While some may consider this work to be inherently racist, the Preface notes the superiority of Negro stories and that they are a people upon whom injustices has often been imposed.
