The poet Edward Watson was born in Jamaica and attended school at Kingston College, the University of Chicago and the University of Toronto. He has taught Practical Criticism and Theory at the University of Windsor. His book ‘Out of the Silent Stone and other poems’ was his first collection of poems to be published. Basil Barrington Watson (9 January 1931 – 26 January 2016) was a Jamaican painter. Born in 1931 January 9th in Lucea, Barrington Watson followed his artistic yearnings by enrolling at the Royal College of Art in London. Watson also studied at Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris and the Rijksacademie in Amsterdam. He traveled widely and then returned to the first Director of Studies at the Jamaica School of Art and co-founded the Contemporary Jamaican Artists' Association (1964–74). He later served as visiting professor at Spelman College, Atlanta. In 1967 he won a prize at the first Spanish Biennale at Barcelona. In 2000 he was awarded a Gold Musgrave Medal by the Institute of Jamaica. Watson has exhibited throughout Jamaica and internationally. Watson is the subject of Lennie Little-White's 2015 documentary film They Call Me Barrington. He died on 26 January 2016 at the age of 85. The author has published articles on Aristotle, James Joyce, John Henry Newman, Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Kenneth Burke and others. He is the recipient of numerous awards, among them Canada Council Research Grants (1968 and 1971) towards the compilation of "A Study of Select English Critical Terms for 1650 - 1800: A Constellation", which was completed in Spain in 1973.
