Fereydoun Hoveyda's brother was Iranian Prime Minister until 1978, when he was murdered by the new government, after having heroically refused to flee the country. Fereydoun Hoveyda (21 September 1924 – 3 November 2006) was an Iranian diplomat, writer and thinker. He was the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations from 1971 until 1979. Hoveyda joined the foreign ministry in the early 1940s. A participant in the final drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, he worked in UNESCO from 1951 to 1966. In the late 1960s, he returned to Iran and worked in the Iranian Foreign Ministry as the undersecretary for international and economic affairs. He was also deputy foreign minister. From 1971 to 1979 he represented Iran at the United Nations. Having been forced out of the Iranian Foreign Ministry following the 1979 revolution, Hoveyda became a senior fellow and member of the Executive Committee of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy (NCAFP). Apart from politics, he was active in the field of cinema and was a founding member of the editorial board of the celebrated film magazine Cahiers du cinéma. More

Stephen Kinzer (born August 4, 1951) is an American author, journalist and academic. He is a former New York Times correspondent. During the 1980s, Kinzer covered revolutions and social upheaval in Central America, and wrote his first book, Bitter Fruit, about military coups and destabilization in Guatemala during the 1950s. In 1990, The New York Times appointed Kinzer to head its Berlin bureau, from which he covered Eastern and Central Europe as they emerged from Soviet bloc. Kinzer was The New York Times chief in the newly established bureau in Istanbul from 1996 to 2000. Upon returning to the United States, Kinzer became the newspaper's culture correspondent, based in Chicago, as well as teaching at Northwestern University. Kinzer then moved to Boston and taught journalism and United States foreign policy at Boston University. He has written several non-fiction books about Turkey, Central America, Iran, and the US overthrow of foreign governments from the late 19th century to the present, as well as Rwanda's recovery from genocide. Matthew Kroenig (born 1977) is an American political scientist, author, national security strategist, and former CIA officer. He is professor in the Department of Government and the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. Kroenig is best known for his research on international security and nuclear weapons. Kroenig began his career as a military analyst in the Strategic Assessment Group at the Central Intelligence Agency. As a CIA officer he analyzed international reactions to Iran’s nuclear program. In 2005, he worked as a strategist in the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he was the principal author of the first ever U.S.-government-wide strategy for deterring terrorist networks. He was recognized by the Office of the Secretary of Defense’s Award for Outstanding Achievement for his work on elevating deterrence to a more central element of the U.S. counter-terrorism strategy. From 2010 to 2011, Kroenig returned to the Pentagon on a Council on Foreign Relations Fellowship to serve as a special advisor on Iran policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. He developed strategic options to address Iran’s nuclear program. Upon leaving, he gained widespread attention for his writing on the viability of the U.S. military option for degrading Iran’s nuclear facilities, including in The New York Times and Foreign Affairs. He has regularly consulted with the defense, diplomatic and intelligence communities. More

Lowell Bruce Laingen (born August 6, 1922) is an American retired diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Malta from 1977 to 1979. Laingen was the most senior American official held hostage during the Iran hostage crisis, serving as the Chargé d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. In 1949 he joined the U.S. Foreign Service. On November 4, 1979, the U.S. embassy was overrun by student protesters. 63 hostages were taken at the embassy, while Laingen and two others were seized at the Iranian Foreign Ministry Office. Laingen and 51 hostages were released on January 20, 1981, following 444 days of captivity. Laingen's next position was that of Vice President of the National Defense University. He retired from the Foreign Service in 1987 after 38 years of service. More
